No One Hurts You But Me by LJ-Phillips No One Hurts You But Me by LJ-Phillips
Once they became involved, Rachel resented anyone else hurting Rabbit emotionally. He was hers, after all. She was fiercely protective of him and got even with anyone who had hurt him (often behind Rabbit's back.)

Rabbit maintained his cold assassin mask in public but Rachel was the one he told when he was anxious or hurt. For example, how he felt physically ill  when (in his capacity as the Assassin's apprentice) he sometimes had to sit in on prisoner interrogations held in - yes, you guessed it - The Red Room. Captain Chuck insisted on it.

Whenever Rabbit was upset and whatever the reason, Rachel would comfort him but also store the information away for later.  And use it against him if she chose.

So why do you think Rachel's comforting Rabbit here? Who or what upset him? Whoever it is, I doubt their career will flourish now they're on Rachel's hit list.

Notes: Abusive relationships are complex. Rachel wasn't constantly abusive. She and Rabbit still had good times. She brought him presents (normally books or pretty clothes.) She comforted him when he had a bad day. Often the sex was good. But she could turn cruel and wounding if she was stressed or wanted to remind him who was in charge.

Young Rabbit is actually quite a bit taller than Rachel (most supernaturals are built on a bigger scale than humans) but he's resting his head against her chest here.

First of all: This is a wonderful piece of art!
It's amazing how you managed to transfer the feelings of pain, angst, shame, discomfort and sadness into Rabbit's eyes. Also Rachel's look is very ambigious, though her dominant feeling is rage, I can catch a glimpse of joy in her eyes, probably caused by the thrill of anticipation on what she's going to do with the culprit who dared to hurt her precious boy. Her body language resembles that of a mother defending her cub, but it also indicates some signs of a dominant lover as well as that of a supervisor, cause though intimate it's at the same time still a bit distant. She's looking like the predator that she is and reminds me very much of a lioness, not only because of her yellow eyes.

About the reason Rabbit is looking like that, I can only guess. There are so many possibilities, some of them were already hinted out by the other commentators and all of them sounded good. My guess would be though that Rabbit had to lead an interrogation in the Red Room together with Chuck who acted very similiar to his past actions. Rabbit was remembered badly about his trauma and is ashamed of it to feel so vulnerable. Rachel's rage would be concentrated on Chuck as well as the person responsible for that arrangement (possibly the current director or another high-rank from the staff).
Rachel acts like this cause she already has assimilated Rabbit and considers him a part of herself. Only this way she's able to really love someone. Whoever's hurting Rabbit is attacking her. So whoever it was they should beware! Rachel's not someone to forgive at all. She's having a liquid in her veins that's able to store revenge like forever. ;)

Ah, thanks my friend  I really appreciate that.
Eyes are the window to the soul and I wanted them to show all of Rabbit's emotions. He's so open about his feelings (apart from when he's in assassin mode.)
Ah, interesting you picked up that flash of joy. The pleasure of the huntress scenting prey. Rachel likes hurting people so she'll enjoy hurting whomever bothered her darling.

Her body language resembles that of a mother defending her cub, but it also indicates some signs of a dominant lover

The whole piece is drenched in Oedipal overtones. At least that's what I was going for  Rachel never treated Rabbit like an equal, even when she protected him. Whereas Tyr insists they regularly step out of their roles and handles certain things as equal partners.

Oh yes, it's entirely possible Rabbit had to sit in on a Red Room interrogation  Chuck was always scrupulously professional towards Rabbit and never mentioned his rape. But he knew how to stir up memories of it to remind Rabbit of his place.

Whoever's hurting Rabbit is attacking her.

Exactly. She saw an attack on Rabbit as an attack on her. And also disrespectful of her. Rabbit was her boy, everyone knew that. If someone hurt him, it was an indicator that they didn't respect her ability to protect him. She's incredibly revengeful.
